Before now, French-Italian designer Giambattista Valli was only available in fine stores like Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman offering luxury womenswear retailing at $2,000+, but now Valli has joined the likes of Target's Issac Mizrahi andMissioni lines and launched a his own low cost line for Macy's right in time for Holiday 2011. The designer created a line of "party dresses for young, fresh girls," Valli said, that provides "a passport into my world and a chance to experience the passion and romance of my house and Paris itself."
The collection includes animal prints galore, leopard print shifts, sequin tees, tuxedo trousers and ruffled party dresses - think the fun party girl style of Betsy Johnson mixed with Lanvin's line for H&M launched in 2010. The pieces will retail for $50 - $100 and are available in Macy's stores nationwide as well as Macys.com.
From a marketing standpoint, high-end designers like Mizrahi, Missioni and now Valli have broadened their audience of consumers by making a more affordable line for all to have a piece of them. Most likely the thought process behind this is that by bringing these low cost duds in to stores like Target, H&M and Macy's, it will influence those shoppers to eventually purchase the high-priced real designer duds. One major con (IMO) to this concept is the loss of exclusivity. Often when a piece is unattainable because of the steep cost it's a lot more alluring, and once you finally do decide to splurge on it, the feeling is indescribable!
So, what about you - would this work on you? If you scoop up a Valli piece at Macy's, will you have a desire to purchase one of his $2,000+ designer pieces down the road??
XOXO
